Observation Narrative
The topographic position of this plot is similar to that of the nearby plot JWNF003, but the habitat is more west facing (vs. north facing), with apparently deeper and less rocky soils. Relatively young Acer saccharum var. saccharum is strongly dominant in this stand, with Fraxinus americana and Quercus rubra as common canopy associates. The herb layer is surprisingly sparse.
Upper northwest slope of Garden Mountain, southeast of Burkes Garden. Plot located at southwest end of sandstone cliffs capping the mountain crest, 0.4 mi WSW of where Rt. 623 crosses the mountain.
